Shogo at the Sex Machine austin screening after party

Shogo at the after-party for the Sex Machine Austin screening. He’d actually only had 2 beers at this stage of the evening.

Jessica Alfrey at the austin screening of the movie Sex Machine

Jessica inadvertently chooses a very appropriate table at the Magnolia Cafe. This is the after-after-after party following the SEX MACHINE Austin screening. Time was approximately 3:30 a.m. By this time pancakes were definitely required.

The screening is over and I’m experiencing the usual tangle of bittersweet emotions that I usually do after one of these things.

The screening went great. This was the first time I’ve seen SEX MACHINE in an actual movie theater and now that I have, it feels like a real movie instead of something living on my computer monitor. Thanks to everybody who came out. The response to the movie was great and the Dobie staff did a great job of accomodating us and making sure the sound was nice and loud. Even though I have spend the last week almost non-stop tweaking things, I still really enjoyed watching the movie with an audience.

It was also great seeing the handful of SEX MACHINE people who came in town. I wish all of you could have stayed longer. It seems like each time we reunite for one of these things, the bonds between us get tighter, deeper and more complicated.

I wish everybody could have made it, but particularly John Howell. His performance was generating all the buzz after the screening. This was an area of the film that I thought got overlooked a little bit after the OKC screening where the audience was hung up on Sheridan and John Stewart’s performances. Those guys are great and they get a lot of fun audience-pleasing stuff to do, but it’s John Howell that anchors the movie in such a smooth and self-assured way that you don’t even realize he’s doing it. I can’t count the number of people who came up to me to tell me that hes’ the “next SOMEBODY”. Which of course I fully believe.

So, I’ve been tinkering.

This is something that will probably send chills down the spines of everybody involved with this movie, but that’s just the way I am. After the March 1st screening, I promise the movie is done. I won’t touch it again. Yeah, there will be promo stuff to do, but as far as the actual movie, I have to put the final nail in the coffin. But if you happened to be at the December screening, there might be a few surprises.
