John Oak Dalton just tipped me off that Sex Machine is now available as an “Instant Play” via Netflix. That means you can watch the movie immediately via your computer or other digital device. I don’t know the details of how it works, but if you’re already a Netflix member, what do you have to lose?

I’m having so much fun with Vimeo, that I want to post every scrap of footage I can get my hands on. Here’s a short documentary about the making of SEX MACHINE. Watching this again brought back so many memories, both good and bad and put me in a head space that I hadn’t been in for quite awhile. Making the movie was an amazing experience and hopefully this captures a glimmer of it.

I spent a lot of my Christmas vacation going through Avid training. The system is pretty tricked out and it’s the smoothest editing system I have worked on. It’s so fast that it makes editing almost like typing in a word processor. No lag time. It just works. I’m sure a properly set up Final Cut rig would be just as fast, but there’s something kind of cool about cutting on an Avid. It’s always been way out of my price range and therefore somewhat mysterious.

As I was deep in editing, I suddenly realized that it was December 28th. The date may not mean much to you, but I will always remember it as the night we first screened Sex Machine at Galileo’s. It was the 2 year anniversary. Strangely enough, we already had made plans to go to Galileo’s later that night.

Thinking back to that day two years ago filled me with mixed emotions. It was one of the most stressful times in my life, but my memories of that time are so vivid. I had dropped off Shogo at the airport – bound for Japan – just a day earlier.After weeks of post-production, editing, sound and color correction, we were literally finishing the movie the day of the screening. We dropped the opening credits into the time line that morning. Then, we set Final Cut Pro to output to tape, loaded up a truck and drove to Galileo’s to put up the screen and speakers. Then we drove back, checked the tape, took showers and went to the screening. At first, I thought it would be impossible to watch the movie with an audience, but I ended up enjoying the hell out of it – and the audience seemed to have a great time as well.

It was strange to be back at Galileo’s on the 2 year anniversary. If you had asked me back then, I would have guaranteed you we would have finished another feature by this time. But we haven’t.

We have accomplished a lot — but not enough.

I got quite a few questions asking about why there was a 4-6 week delay to get Sex Machine from Amazon. Apparently, they were out of stock. But now you can order a copy and have it shipped overnight.
